ISO 4831:2006 is an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard that provides general guidelines for the detection and enumeration of coliforms in food and animal feeding stuffs. It's applicable to both products intended for human and animal consumption, as well as environmental samples in food production and handling areas. The standard uses the most probable number (MPN) technique to determine the number of coliforms, which is calculated after incubating samples in a liquid medium at 30 or 37°C.
