What is International Trademark Registration?
International Trademark Registration allows a business or
individual to protect their brand name, logo, or symbol in multiple countries
through a single application.
This is done under the Madrid Protocol, managed by WIPO (World
Intellectual Property Organization).
Example: If you have a
brand in India and want to register it in USA, UK, UAE, China etc. — you can do
it in one go via the Madrid System.

Process of
International Trademark Registration:
Step 1:
Register your trademark in your home country (basic
registration) — for example, in India via IP India.
Step 2:
File an international application through your home country’s
Trademark Office (called an "Office of origin") under the Madrid
Protocol.
Step 3:
Select the countries where you want protection (called
designated countries).
Step 4:
WIPO examines your application for formalities check and
forwards it to the respective designated countries.
Step 5:
Each country examines your application as per their national
laws.
Step 6:
If approved — your trademark gets protection in those countries.
If objected — you get a chance to reply.
Step 7:
Trademark is valid for 10 years and can be renewed.
Criteria /
Eligibility:
You must have a registered or pending trademark in your home
country.
You must be a national, domiciled, or have a real and effective
industrial or commercial establishment in a Madrid Protocol member country
(India is a member).
You can only designate countries that are also members of the
Madrid System.
If you plan to expand your business overseas or sell products and services in multiple countries, international registration ensures your brand is legally protected from misuse, imitation, or unauthorized use.
The Madrid System (Madrid Protocol and Madrid Agreement) is the most widely used international trademark registration system, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
As of now, the Madrid System covers over 130 member countries, including major economies like the USA, UK, China, Australia, and European Union nations.
To apply for an international trademark, you must: Have a registered trademark or a pending application in your home country (called the ‘basic application’ or ‘basic registration’). Be a citizen, resident, or have a commercial establishment in a member country of the Madrid System.
It is valid for 10 years from the date of registration and can be renewed indefinitely for additional 10-year periods.
